ABOUT THE POSITION

The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Department of Public Works are announcing a recruitment for the position of Road Maintenance Worker II.

There is one (1) full-time (75 hours bi-weekly), regular vacancy in the Roads Division. The Roads Division has two corporation yards located in Nicasio and at the Civic Center in San Rafael. A sign shop is located in the Nicasio yard. The Division maintains 1,016 total road segments totaling 846 lane miles of road some of which run through State Parks, National Parks and National Monuments.

Road Maintenance Workers perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work in the Roads Division of the Department of Public Works. Operation of trucks and related light equipment is required. The Road Maintenance Worker II may be assigned to the Sign Shop where responsibilities may include painting line markings on pavement and painting curbs, measuring and laying out center lines, crosswalks and other markings in addition to centerline striping and edge line striping.

Road Maintenance Workers are required to work in a wide variety of weather conditions and must be willing to work on-call and in emergency situations as needed. Workers must also be willing to wear a County provided uniform.

They are highly organized willing to learn new methods and techniques and enjoy working in a team environment.

The highly qualified candidate will have a wide range of experience and knowledge related to construction tools and maintenance procedures including but not limited to: excavation and compaction equipment, saws (chain and pole), pruners, underground construction, and asphalt and seal placement. The candidate will have experience working with traffic signage and striping. The candidate will have directly related experience working around heavy construction and maintenance operations involving live traffic control (flagging). The ideal candidate will possess an ATSSA and/or MUTCD approved Flagger Certification.

We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply if you do not have at least the following required Minimum Qualifications: Education and experience which includes 6 months experience at the level of Road Maintenance Worker I or its equivalent such as construction, or other closely related field and demonstration of the knowledge and skills as stated in the class specification.

License: This job class requires travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver’s license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history.

Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving history as obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles is required.

Probationary employees must obtain a California Class A driver’s license prior to the end of the one-year probationary period.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Please note that all offers are contingent upon passing a County physical and drug screening.

Physical Demands: Strength to perform physical labor and to Frequently lift/move up to 25lbs & occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds is an essential function of this job.

Working Conditions: Candidates must be willing to work in outside weather conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, work in confined spaces and with hazardous materials. Candidates may also be required to work nights, weekends and holidays, overtime and on-call.
